What Is the T20 Blast 2026?

The T20 Blast 2026, officially branded as the Vitality Blast 2026 due to title sponsorship, is the 24th edition of England’s most celebrated domestic Twenty20 competition. Organised by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), it remains the oldest professional domestic T20 league in the world — launched in 2003 as the Twenty20 Cup, long before the IPL, BBL, or any other global T20 competition existed.

All 18 first-class counties — 17 from England, one from Wales — compete in the T20 Blast teams lineup every season. From historic giants like Yorkshire, Surrey, and Lancashire to modern powerhouses like Somerset and Hampshire, the competition covers the full breadth of English county cricket. Formerly known as the NatWest T20 Blast between 2014 and 2017, the tournament has been the Vitality Blast since 2018 but is still widely searched and referred to as the T20 Blast by fans worldwide.

The 2026 edition brings the most significant structural overhaul in over a decade, with a new three-group format, a compact season completed entirely before The Hundred, and Finals Day moved to July for the first time in the competition’s history. Somerset enter as defending champions after their stunning six-wicket win over Hampshire Hawks in the 2025 final at Edgbaston.

New Format 2026 — Three Groups Explained

The T20 Blast 2026 format represents the biggest change to the competition’s structure since the two-group system was introduced in 2014. Following a county-led Domestic Playing Programme (DPP) review — with a majority vote from all 18 Professional County Cricket Clubs — the ECB confirmed the new format in August 2025. Here is everything you need to know about how the T20 Blast teams will compete in 2026:

Under the new T20 Blast 2026 structure, each county plays 10 matches within their own group (home and away against the other five sides), plus two crossover fixtures — one home, one away — against teams from other groups, bringing the total to 12 group matches per team. The top two from each group, plus the two best third-placed sides across all three groups, advance to the quarter-finals on 15 July 2026.

💡 Why the Change? The previous format created a gap of up to six weeks between the end of the group stage and the quarter-finals — a scheduling gap widely criticised by players and fans alike. The new 2026 format eliminates this entirely: the quarter-finals follow immediately after the group stage, and the entire competition wraps up on 18 July — before The Hundred begins on 21 July. PCA surveys showed 83% of county players reporting physical strain and 67% citing mental wellbeing concerns under the old schedule.

Group A Teams & Squads — North Group 2026

Group A of the T20 Blast 2026 contains six northern counties, headlined by the famous Roses rivalry between Lancashire and Yorkshire — one of the most anticipated fixtures on the entire Vitality Blast schedule every single season. Lancashire return with a spectacularly strengthened T20 squad following a major winter investment.

Lancashire Lightning — T20 Blast Squad 2026

Lancashire have made the most eye-catching squad investment of any T20 Blast team in 2026. Head coach Steven Croft — appointed permanently in November 2025 — oversaw the signing of Jos Buttler, Liam Livingstone, and Luke Wood on T20-only contracts, with all three available exclusively for the Vitality Blast following their IPL commitments. Saqib Mahmood has also signed a T20 contract with an option for red-ball cricket. Overseas signing Chris Green (Australia) adds T20 specialist spin to the attack.

Yorkshire Vikings — T20 Blast Squad 2026

Yorkshire enter 2026 with Dawid Malan joining on a Vitality Blast contract — a hugely experienced T20 batsman who brings calm and class to the top order. Overseas signing D’Arcy Short (Australia) adds left-handed explosive batting to complement Yorkshire’s home-grown talent. The Roses clash at Headingley and Old Trafford remains one of the most anticipated T20 Blast fixtures in Group A.

  • Dawid Malan — Vitality Blast signing; former England T20 captain and ICC No.1 ranked T20 batter; brings invaluable experience to the top order
  • D’Arcy Short — Australian overseas signing for the T20 Blast; destructive left-handed opener; explosive power hitter well-suited to English conditions
  • Harry Brook — England’s Test and T20 captain; an explosive batsman who, when available, transforms Yorkshire’s batting line-up entirely
  • Ben Aitchison — claimed his maiden T20 five-wicket haul in 2025; one of Yorkshire’s most promising young seamers heading into 2026
  • Will O’Rourke — New Zealand-born pace bowler; took his first T20 Blast five-for in 2025; a genuine wicket-taking threat with the new ball

Nottinghamshire Outlaws — T20 Blast Squad 2026

Two-time T20 Blast champions (2017, 2020), Notts Outlaws are always dangerous at Trent Bridge — one of the most batting-friendly venues in the country. Their overseas acquisition of Ashton Turner (Australia) for the Vitality Blast adds power-hitting pedigree to their middle order, while Ajaz Patel (New Zealand) provides world-class spin across all formats.

Leicestershire Foxes — T20 Blast Squad 2026

The joint-most successful county in T20 Blast history with three titles, Leicestershire remain competitive in the Blast. Josh Davey joins from Somerset, adding seam bowling depth, while Ben Green — a key figure in Somerset’s recent title wins — also moves to Leicestershire, bringing proven Finals Day experience to Grace Road.

Derbyshire Falcons — T20 Blast Squad 2026

Derbyshire bolster their T20 Blast squad with the additions of Benny Howell from Hampshire and overseas signing George Munsey (Scotland) for the Blast — a powerful left-handed top-order batsman who has scored prolifically in domestic T20 cricket across the globe. Overseas pace ace Peter Siddle (Australia) adds experience to the bowling attack.

Durham — T20 Blast Squad 2026

Durham had a positive 2025 campaign and enter 2026 with fresh energy. Kasey Aldridge departs to Somerset, but Durham’s core remains competitive. They face the challenge of the Roses giants — Lancashire and Yorkshire — in Group A, making their crossover fixtures crucial for quarter-final qualification.

Group B Teams & Squads — Central Group 2026

Group B is arguably the most fascinating group in the T20 Blast 2026. It contains Somerset — defending champions making their first title defence — alongside 2024 champions Gloucestershire, perennial contenders Northamptonshire Steelbacks, resurgent Warwickshire Bears, and the dangerous Welsh county Glamorgan. The West Country derby between Somerset and Gloucestershire in this group is one of the most mouth-watering fixtures on the entire T20 Blast 2026 schedule.

Somerset — T20 Blast Squad 2026 (Defending Champions)

Somerset enter the T20 Blast 2026 squad battle as three-time champions and defending title holders, led by the core of the team that triumphed in 2025. Riley Meredith (Australia) returns as their overseas pace spearhead — the leading wicket-taker from the 2025 Blast with 28 wickets. Will Smeed — hero of the 2025 final with 94 off 58 — spearheads a powerful batting line-up alongside Tom Kohler-Cadmore and Lewis Gregory.

Warwickshire Bears — operating under their county name rather than the former “Birmingham Bears” branding — are strengthened by the return of Sikandar Raza (Zimbabwe) as an overseas Vitality Blast signing. The veteran Zimbabwe captain and T20 World Cup star brings match-winning all-round ability. Left-arm spinner Danny Briggs also joins on a Blast-only deal from Sussex, adding valuable experience.

Northamptonshire Steelbacks — T20 Blast Squad 2026

After reaching the 2025 Finals Day semi-finals, Northants enter 2026 with Ben Sanderson — whose remarkable 6-8 (including a hat-trick) against Worcestershire in 2025 was the third-best figures in T20 Blast history — back as their cornerstone seam bowler. Keshav Maharaj (South Africa) joins as an overseas Vitality Blast signing, giving the Steelbacks one of the finest spin options in the entire competition. Calvin Harrison joins from Derbyshire to bolster batting options.

Gloucestershire — T20 Blast Squad 2026

The 2024 champions enter 2026 looking to bounce back after their title defence fell short in 2025. Their overseas Vitality Blast signing of D’Arcy Short… wait — Short goes to Yorkshire. Gloucestershire instead bring in Zaman Akhter from Essex, while welcoming Archie Bailey and Ajeet Singh Dale as additions who strengthen both their batting depth and seam attack heading into 2026.

Worcestershire Rapids — T20 Blast Squad 2026

The 2018 champions bring in overseas signing Tom Rogers (Australia) for the Vitality Blast, adding genuine pace to their attack. Isaac Mohammed continues his development after making his T20 debut in 2025. Worcestershire’s home fixtures at New Road — one of the most picturesque grounds in England — make them strong performers at home in the group stage.

Glamorgan — T20 Blast Squad 2026

Wales’s sole representatives in the T20 Blast, Glamorgan play their home matches at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff — a stadium with a growing reputation for T20 cricket. They bring in Sean Dickson from Somerset — a player who hit a match-winning 71 off 26 balls in Somerset’s 2025 quarter-final — alongside Sam Northeast from Kent. Overseas signing Fazalhaq Farooqi (Afghanistan) offers a world-class left-arm seam threat for the Vitality Blast.

Group C Teams & Squads — South Group 2026

Group C is the most competitive group on paper — containing five former T20 Blast champions: Surrey (2003), Sussex (2009), Hampshire Hawks (2010, 2012, 2022), Kent Spitfires (2007, 2021), and Essex Eagles (2019) — alongside Middlesex. The London derbies between Surrey, Middlesex, and Essex, and the South-East clash between Kent and Sussex, make Group C a must-watch group from the very first weekend of the T20 Blast 2026 schedule.

Surrey — T20 Blast Squad 2026

South Group leaders in 2025, Surrey’s T20 Blast squad is built around some of England’s most exciting white-ball talent. Will Jacks — who scored a 58-ball century against Sussex in 2025, averaging over 50 across 10 matches — returns as their batting cornerstone. Overseas signing Chris Lynn (Australia) joins for the Vitality Blast, adding one of the world’s most destructive T20 openers to Surrey’s formidable line-up.

Hampshire Hawks — T20 Blast Squad 2026

Three-time champions and 2025 finalists, Hampshire Hawks remain one of the T20 Blast’s most consistent forces. James Vince leads the side as captain — he scored 52 in the 2025 final and holds the record for the most Finals Day appearances of any player in T20 Blast history (81+ T20 half-centuries). Toby Albert — the 2025 tournament’s leading run-scorer with 633 at an average of 48.69 — returns as the Hawks’ attacking opener.

  • Toby Albert — 2025 Blast’s leading run-scorer (633 runs, avg 48.69); scored 85 in the 2025 final; Hampshire’s most dangerous batting weapon
  • James Vince — experienced T20 captain; scored 52 in the 2025 final; among the most consistent batsmen in Blast history
  • Scott Currie — 27 wickets in 2025 Blast (second most in tournament); young fast bowler who is rapidly becoming one of England’s most exciting pace prospects
  • Liam Dawson — left-arm spin all-rounder; a Finals Day veteran who provides balance and control in Hampshire’s middle overs
  • Sean Abbott (Australia) — overseas signing; right-arm pace; available until 18 July, perfectly timed for the Blast

Kent Spitfires — T20 Blast Squad 2026

Two-time champions Kent enter 2026 with an interesting overseas acquisition: Senuran Muthusamy (South Africa) for the Vitality Blast, adding all-round quality. Sam Northeast departs to Glamorgan, but Jack Leaning — who joins from Warwickshire — adds batting depth alongside the formidable Kent pace attack.

Essex Eagles — T20 Blast Squad 2026

The 2019 champions are strengthened with overseas signing Migael Pretorius (South Africa) and the return of Shoaib Bashir — England’s off-spinner who joins from Somerset. Jordan Cox — who scored his first T20 century during the 2025 Blast — returns as a key batting asset for Essex’s Group C campaign.

Middlesex — T20 Blast Squad 2026

The 2008 champions play their home fixtures at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground — the home of cricket and always an atmospheric venue for T20 Blast matches. Stephen Eskinazi joins from Warwickshire, bolstering their batting resources. Nathan McAndrew (Australia) provides an overseas seam bowling option for the Vitality Blast period.

Sussex Sharks — T20 Blast Squad 2026

The 2009 champions compete at the 1st Central County Ground in Hove — a ground with a unique coastal atmosphere. Sussex bring in Dom Goodman and Tom Price from Gloucestershire, while overseas signing Beau Webster (Australia) joins for the first half of the season. The Sussex vs Hampshire clash and the Kent vs Sussex South-East derby are among the most anticipated Group C fixtures.

Key Overseas Signings — T20 Blast 2026

The T20 Blast 2026 squads are packed with England internationals, making the Vitality Blast a genuine showcase of the best English T20 talent. With the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 completed and the international calendar temporarily clear, several England white-ball stars are available for the full Blast campaign in 2026:

  • Jos Buttler (Lancashire) — England’s greatest ever white-ball batsman; T20 contract at Old Trafford; reached 13,000 T20 runs during the 2025 Blast; one of the world’s most destructive openers

  • Will Jacks (Surrey) — emerging as one of England’s best T20 batsmen; scored a century in the 2025 Blast and averaged 50+ across the tournament
  • Sam Curran (Surrey) — IPL record-breaking all-rounder; left-arm pace and lower-order batting; 2022 T20 World Cup Player of the Tournament
  • Saqib Mahmood (Lancashire) — England’s most exciting pace prospect; T20 hat-trick in 2025; raw pace and late swing that can unsettle any T20 top order

  • Toby Albert (Hampshire) — 2025 Blast’s leading run-scorer with 633 at 48.69; outstanding young opener who announced himself on the biggest stage last season
  • Will Smeed (Somerset) — 94 off 58 in the 2025 final; the most exciting young T20 batsman in the South Group; five 50+ scores in the 2025 knockout stages
  • Scott Currie (Hampshire) — 27 wickets in 2025 Blast (second in tournament); one of the most exciting young fast bowlers in English cricket heading into 2026

Defending Champions — Somerset’s Title Defence

Somerset enter the T20 Blast 2026 as defending champions — and as the joint-most successful team in competition history with three titles (2005, 2023, 2025). Their title defence begins in the most thrilling way possible: the opening Friday night fixture of the 2026 season is a home rematch of last year’s final — Somerset vs Hampshire Hawks at Taunton. It is a statement of intent from the ECB’s fixture schedulers, and promises to be one of the most anticipated T20 Blast matches in recent memory.

🏆

Somerset — Defending T20 Blast Champions

Titles: 3 — 2005, 2023, 2025 (joint record with Hampshire & Leicestershire)
2025 Final: Beat Hampshire Hawks by 6 wickets at Edgbaston
2026 Group: Group B — with Gloucestershire, Northants, Warwickshire, Worcestershire, Glamorgan
Opening fixture: Home vs Hampshire Hawks, Taunton — Friday 22 May 2026
Key returning players: Will Smeed, Lewis Gregory (capt), Tom Kohler-Cadmore, Riley Meredith
Key addition: Kasey Aldridge joins from Durham; Daniel Sams new overseas signing

Somerset’s challenge in defending their title is made more complex by the new three-group format: rather than meeting Hampshire in the same South Group as in 2025, the two finalists are now in different groups — Somerset in Group B, Hampshire in Group C — meaning they can only meet again in the knockout rounds. The West Country derby against Gloucestershire in Group B will be the most anticipated regular-season T20 Blast fixture in Somerset’s 2026 campaign.

Finals Day 2026 — Edgbaston, 18 July 2026

T20 Blast Finals Day 2026 takes place on Saturday 18 July 2026 at Edgbaston, Birmingham — making it the first-ever July Finals Day in the competition’s 24-year history. Edgbaston hosts its 14th consecutive men’s Vitality Blast Finals Day, cementing its permanent status as the home of the T20 Blast’s greatest occasion.

🎉 Why July Finals Day Is Historic: Since 2003, Finals Day had always been held in either August or September. Moving it to July 2026 — immediately after the quarter-finals on the 15th — eliminates the controversial “long gap” and ensures all T20 Blast action is completed before The Hundred begins on 21 July. It is the single most significant structural change in the competition’s history.

T20 Blast Teams — History & Heritage

The T20 Blast team landscape has evolved enormously since the competition launched in 2003 as the Twenty20 Cup. Understanding which counties have won, which rivalries define the competition, and what makes the Vitality Blast unique helps fans appreciate why these teams — and the matchups between them — matter so much more than just one domestic cricket tournament.

Notably, Durham, Derbyshire, Glamorgan, and Yorkshire are the only counties that have never won the T20 Blast title — a fact that makes their campaigns in 2026 all the more compelling as they hunt that historic first championship. The T20 Blast’s 24-year history also confirms that no team has ever won back-to-back titles — making Somerset’s 2026 title defence statistically unprecedented territory.

There are 18 teams in the T20 Blast 2026 — all 18 first-class counties of England and Wales. They are divided into three groups of six: Group A (North), Group B (Central), and Group C (South). This replaces the previous two-group format of nine teams per group used since 2014.

Where can I find the official T20 Blast 2026 squad for each team?
Official T20 Blast 2026 squads are published by each county on their own official websites, and are also listed on the ECB’s official site at ecb.co.uk. ESPNcricinfo and Sky Sports also maintain up-to-date squad lists throughout the season. Squad compositions can change due to overseas player availability and injury, so always check the official county sources for the most current T20 Blast squad information.
What is the difference between the NatWest T20 Blast teams and the Vitality Blast teams?
The NatWest T20 Blast teams and the Vitality Blast teams are exactly the same 18 counties — the name changed when the title sponsorship changed. NatWest sponsored the competition from 2014 to 2017, making it the “NatWest T20 Blast.” Vitality took over sponsorship in 2018, renaming it the “Vitality Blast.” The teams, format, and competition structure have remained broadly consistent throughout.
Which T20 Blast team has won the most titles?
Somerset, Hampshire, and Leicestershire are the joint-most successful teams in T20 Blast history, each having won the title three times. Somerset’s three titles came in 2005, 2023, and 2025. Hampshire’s were in 2010, 2012, and 2022. Leicestershire won in 2004, 2006, and 2011.
Who are the key overseas players in the T20 Blast 2026 squad?
The most high-profile T20 Blast 2026 overseas squad signings include: Chris Lynn (Surrey, Australia), Riley Meredith (Somerset, Australia), Keshav Maharaj (Northants, South Africa), Sikandar Raza (Warwickshire, Zimbabwe), Fazalhaq Farooqi (Glamorgan, Afghanistan), Ashton Turner (Nottinghamshire, Australia), and Yuzvendra Chahal (Surrey, India).
What is the T20 Blast 2026 squad format — how many players per team?
There is no hard cap on the number of players in a T20 Blast squad — each county selects an XI from their available pool for each match. Counties typically carry larger squads of 15–20 players to manage workload, injuries, and overseas player availability windows. Most counties will have one or two designated overseas Vitality Blast signing slots used across the season.
Has any T20 Blast team ever won back-to-back titles?
No — in the 24-year history of the T20 Blast, no county has ever won back-to-back titles. This makes Somerset’s defence of their 2025 championship a truly historic opportunity. If Somerset were to win in 2026, they would become the first team ever to retain the T20 Blast title — a feat that has eluded every county since the Twenty20 Cup began in 2003.
Which T20 Blast team does Jos Buttler play for in 2026?
Jos Buttler plays for Lancashire Lightning in the T20 Blast 2026. He has signed a T20-only contract with Lancashire, making him available exclusively for the Vitality Blast following his IPL commitments. Buttler joins Liam Livingstone, Saqib Mahmood, and Luke Wood as T20 specialists signed by Lancashire for the 2026 season — making Old Trafford one of the most exciting T20 Blast destinations in the entire competition.
