About the Competition

What Is the T20 Blast 2026?

The T20 Blast, officially known this season as the Vitality Blast 2026, is England’s premier domestic Twenty20 cricket competition. Organised and run by the England and Wales Cricket Board, it brings together all 18 first-class counties across a concentrated summer window of fast, high-intensity T20 cricket. The 2026 edition is the 24th in the tournament’s history, making it the longest-running domestic T20 league anywhere in the world.

Somerset go into the new season as defending champions. They claimed their third Vitality Blast title in dramatic style in 2025, defeating Hampshire Hawks in a thrilling final at Edgbaston — a result that cemented their place as one of the great T20 sides of the modern county era. They open the 2026 competition at home against that very same Hampshire side, making the first Friday night of the season feel like a rematch worth watching.

Format Overhaul

New Format Explained: What Has Changed in 2026

3 Groups (was 2)
12 Matches per team
80% Fan-friendly slots
61 Double headers
6 Back-to-backs (↓ from 50+)

Three Groups Instead of Two

Previous seasons ran with two large groups of nine teams each. That format spread fixtures thinly and made the group stage feel stretched. For 2026, the 18 counties are divided into three compact groups of six — labelled Group A (North), Group B (Central), and Group C (South). This creates a geographically smarter structure with stronger local rivalries built naturally into the fixture list.

Fewer Matches, Better Quality

Each county now plays 12 group-stage matches instead of 14. Every county faces the five other sides in its group home and away — that is 10 matches — with two additional crossover fixtures against teams from other groups, one at home and one away. The total number of consecutive back-to-back matches in the men’s competition has been reduced from over 50 in recent seasons down to just six across the entire 2026 campaign.

80% of Fixtures in Fan-Friendly Slots

Eight out of every ten men’s group-stage matches fall on a Friday, Sunday, or Bank Holiday. This is a deliberate move to maximise live attendance and make the competition as accessible as possible for working fans and families.

61 Double Headers

A total of 61 double headers are scheduled across the 2026 season, pairing men’s and women’s matches at the same venue on the same day. Every county will host at least one double header, creating a genuine celebration of the game at county grounds up and down the country.

Knockout Stages Follow Immediately

The group stage concludes over Finale Weekend (10–12 July), with the quarter-finals following just three days later on 15 July. Momentum is maintained and the competition builds to its climax without interruption.

Back-to-Back Finals Days

For the first time, the women’s and men’s Finals Days are held on consecutive days — Friday 17 July at the Kia Oval for the women, and Saturday 18 July at Edgbaston for the men. It creates a two-day celebration of T20 cricket unique in the English domestic calendar.

Group Allocations

T20 Blast 2026 Groups and Teams

Each side faces the five other counties in its group home and away, then plays two cross-group fixtures. Derby rivalries — Roses clashes in the North, South Coast rivalries in Group C, Midlands battles in Group B — are all guaranteed across the T20 Blast 2026 fixture list.

Bank Holiday Launch

T20 Blast 2026 Opening Weekend Fixtures

The 2026 Vitality Blast launches over the Bank Holiday Weekend with nine matches on the opening Friday alone, making it the biggest single-day launch in the tournament’s history.

Overseas Stars to Watch in the 2026 Vitality Blast

Tristan Stubbs
South Africa Hampshire Hawks

The explosive South Africa middle-order batter arrives fresh off a strong 2025 Blast showing. A destructive striker with an instinctive T20 game, Stubbs will be central to Hampshire’s push to go one step further after their 2025 final defeat.

D’Arcy Short
Australia Gloucestershire

One of the most accomplished openers in world T20 cricket. His ability to anchor an innings or go hard from ball one makes him a genuine match-winner, and Gloucestershire will lean heavily on his experience at the top of the order.

Sikandar Raza
Zimbabwe Worcestershire Rapids

Zimbabwe’s most celebrated T20 allrounder brings big-hitting and clever off-spin bowling to Worcestershire. A fan favourite everywhere he plays, Raza adds experience, composure under pressure, and genuine all-round quality.

Ben McDermott
Australia Lancashire Lightning

One of the top performers in the previous T20 Blast season, the Queensland wicketkeeper-batter returns in superb form. His ability to accelerate in the middle overs gives Lancashire a serious finisher and makes them a genuine Group A threat.

Naveen Ul-Haq
Afghanistan Yorkshire

The Afghan right-arm seamer has built a fearsome reputation in franchise T20 cricket. Bringing pace, variety, and fierce competitiveness, Naveen adds a different dimension to Yorkshire’s attack and will be a genuine wicket-taking threat.

Hilton Cartwright
Australia Hampshire Hawks

A hard-hitting middle-order allrounder with the ball to back it up, Cartwright is a powerful addition to Hampshire’s 2026 Vitality Blast squad alongside Stubbs, making Hampshire a genuinely formidable batting unit.

George Linde
South Africa Notts Outlaws

The South African left-arm spinner and powerful lower-order batter fits perfectly into Notts’ all-round setup. Linde’s ability to both contain and take wickets in the Powerplay and death overs makes him a genuine T20 specialist.

Peter Siddle

Contenders

Teams to Watch in the T20 Blast 2026

Somerset — Defending Champions

Arrive as defending champions opening with a home fixture that doubles as a 2025 final rematch against Hampshire. Their batting depth, Riley Meredith’s overseas pace threat, and a settled county core make them the team to beat.

Surrey — Consistent Threat

Always competitive in T20 cricket, Surrey play in a Group C loaded with big names. Their home opener against Lancashire at the Kia Oval sets the tone for what should be a South Group full of quality.

Lancashire Lightning — Strengthened

Significantly strengthened with Ben McDermott and the appointment of Matthew Mott as T20 consultant. Playing at Emirates Old Trafford and with several crossover fixtures, they carry genuine quarter-final potential from Group A.

Hampshire Hawks — Motivated

A point to prove after their 2025 final defeat. The GMR Group’s investment has brought in Stubbs and Cartwright as overseas stars, signalling serious ambition to reach Finals Day again and go one better.

Yorkshire — Resurgent

Resurgent with Moeen Ali making a remarkable return to domestic T20 cricket. Add Naveen Ul-Haq into the bowling attack and Yorkshire look capable of making waves in a competitive North Group.
